SSgt. (ret. Air Force) Marshall Dee “Doc” Kelly, 76, of Great Falls, a former military police officer and an Air Force veteran, died Sunday, August 22, 2010, at a local hospital of natural causes. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the noon funeral services in the chapel at Fort Harrison Veterans Cemetery on Friday, August 27, 2010, followed by burial with military honors at 1:30 p.m. Schnider Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Doc was born January 24, 1934, to Alta Alice (Hood) and Roy E. Kelly in Medford, OR, and raised in Central Point, OR. He married Karen Schwarze in Coeur d’Alene, ID, in 1966; they divorced in 1980. He served in the Air Force in Oregon, Washington, Germany, Japan, Labrador and Montana, where he eventually retired in 1976. While in the service, Doc worked as a military policeman from 1954 to 1965 and as a supply sergeant from 1965 to 1976. The highlight of SSgt. Kelly’s career occurred in Berlin, Germany, as part of the occupation forces. SSgt. Kelly arrived in Berlin just after the wall was erected and served there for three years. During that time, he received the Occupation Medal, Expeditionary Medal and the Outstanding Unit award. SSgt. Kelly was also awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his service in Goose Bay, Labrador. After retiring, SSgt. Kelly attended the College of Great Falls, graduating with a B.S. in accounting in 1979. He moved to Helena and worked briefly in accounting at Fort Harrison before returning to police work. SSgt. Kelly was a police officer at Fort Harrison until 1992. He was a Mason; a member of the NRA; the American Legion; and the military order of the “Cootie.” He was also an accomplished woodworker and a very good friend. Survivors include his partner, Nancy Schultz of Helena; a daughter, Kathlene Kelly of Missoula; brothers S. Roy Kelly of Belgrade and Melvin L. Kelly of Medford, OR. He was preceded in death by his parents and his former wife, Karen Kelly.Debbie Shaw; a brother, Paul Shaw; a sister, Joan Shaw; and his parents. | ||
