Doris Habel

Doris Maxine McCoy Habel passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, June 4, 2016.Doris was born in Scottsbluff, NE on November 17, 1920 to William F. and Mabel E. (Jones) McCoy. She was the third of three daughters. In 1938, she graduated from Rising City High School. After graduation, Doris moved with her family from Nebraska to the Gallatin Valley in Montana, where she met the love of her life, Arthur M. Habel. They were married on May 18, 1942 in Bozeman, MT at Holy Rosary Church. Doris and Art lived in Bozeman, Conrad, and settled in Dutton, where they were engaged in farming until their retirement. They then moved to the Sunshine Trail Lodge, where Doris lived until almost a year ago when she moved to the Grandview in Great Falls.Doris was a member of the St. Williams Catholic Church in Dutton, having been the CCW secretary. She was a member of the Black Eagle-Assiniboine DAR Chapter in Great Falls, where she served as their Chapter Regent from 1994-1996, and was their oldest member. She was a member of the Dutton American Legion Auxiliary Post 64, where she served as their secretary for many years, and proudly helped sell American Legion drawing raffle tickets. Doris also was a member of the Dutton Civic Club, and was very involved with Dutton Fun Day. Need a raffle ticket? She wouldnt take NO for an answer!Doris loved to travel with Art. They traveled extensively around the world to New Zealand, Australia, Tahiti, Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Germany, and throughout the United States.In 2004, Doris and Art were named Super Fans by the Montana High School Association. This was a well deserved award as she was an avid sports fan and followed her grandchildren and great grandchildren in their many activities. She enjoyed watching in person, on TV, or listening to the radio to her favorite teams the Montana State Bobcats, Seattle Seahawks, and San Antonio Spurs.She is survived by her sons, Arthur W. Bill Habel (Lynn) and Gerald R. Jerry Habel of Dutton; daughters Kathryn Richardson (Fred) of Rancho Murieta, CA and Susan Snellman (Dick) of Power; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mabel McCoy; two sisters, Margaret Westbrook and Hester Nitz Hart; Arthur M. Habel, her husband of 62 years; baby daughter, Mary Jo Habel; grandson Dan Habel; along with several nieces and nephews.We are very thankful to the staff of Grandview for providing Doris with loving care. She enjoyed her time there playing her weekly game of Bingo (and winning a lot), attending Mass, and having her hair and nails done.A visitation will be held at 6:00 p.m. followed by a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2016 at St. William's Catholic Church in Dutton. A funeral liturgy will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at St. William's Catholic Church in Dutton, followed by burial at Dutton Cemetery. Schnider Funeral Home is handling arrangements.Memorial suggestions are to the Dutton American Legion Auxiliary Post 64, St. Williams Catholic Church of Dutton, or donors choice.
