Gladys Hall

Gladys E. (Meyer) Hall, 87, of Great Falls died of natural causes Monday, March 4, 2013 at a local hospital.A vigil service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2013 at Hillcrest Lawn Memorial Chapel. A funeral liturgy will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.Inurnment will take place at a later date at Mount Olivet Cemetery.Schnider Funeral Home is handling arrangements.Gladys was born and spent her younger years in northern Minnesota on the small family farm. During the depression years her family sold out and moved to Billings, Montana looking for work. Her dad was always able to find a job and passed that incredible work ethic to his children. Gladys love of horses started very early and she recently told stories of hanging around the cattle yards in Billings hoping someone would let her be around their horses. She made many lifelong friends there in Billings and both her brothers, Weldon and Gene Meyers, raised their families there. Billings was one of her favorite places in the world and she kept trying to convince one of her children to move there so she could tag along. Gladys only sister, Irene Trudeau moved to Michigan early in her life and raised her family there. Gladys very much enjoyed flying to Michigan to see all the nieces and nephews and relive old mischief with her big sis.She met and married Harry Hall in Billings shortly after he got out of the Navy after WWII. She was working as a ranch cook at the Spidel Ranch and thus started her career. Her parents were both excellent cooks and passed their skills on. She and Harry moved to Great Falls when he started training to be an air traffic controller and they remained here until their deaths. They raised 5 children in Great Falls; Marilyn Nelson (Robert Nelson) of Selah, WA; Terry Hall (Lynette Shanahan) of Moses Lake, WA; Kathy Shelton (Jim Shelton) and Susan Jordan (Marvin Jordan) of Great Falls, and Cheryl Miller (Bob Miller) of Emmett, ID. Gladys was a cook at the Horizon Club, at the original airport in Great Falls, the Elks Club where she eventually became the kitchen manager, and retired as kitchen manager from the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind.While she enjoyed her work it eventually became just a means to support her horse habit. Her most favorite memories were working cattle on the Murphy and Carlile Ranches, 4H trail rides through the little Belt Mountains, trail rides through the Tenderfoot and over to White Sulphur Springs, raising and showing her Tennessee Walking horses, and retiring on their land on 10 Mile Lane.In Gladys life, family was even more important than her horses. From her children, 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews she received her greatest treasures. Her cabinet of pictures showed each and every child, grandchild and great grandchild at various stages in their lives and it had a prominent place in her living room.Gladys was predeceased by her grandson, David Shelton in 2010.
