Harold "Harry" Engen

July 27, 1943 — June 6, 2016

Harold left this world June 6, 2016, surrounded by family, from a chronic illness.A funeral service will be on Monday, June 13, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Lawn Memorial Chapel with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery. Schnider Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.Harold grew up in Fairview, North Dakota, born to Phyllis Vickers and Alf Engen, July 27, 1943. He loved hunting and fishing throughout his life with his sons or his granddaughters. Harold was a member of the Army National Guard for 6 years. He married Shirley St. Pierre November 13, 1964 in George, Washington. They had two sons Bryan and Eldon. Harold worked various jobs and moved to Great Falls in 1965. He worked for the Anaconda Company in the furnace refinery for 16 years. He then worked as a laborer for the City of Great Falls for 25 years, retiring in 2005.He always put family first, and will always be remembered as a family man. He was there for his family no matter what. We could never go anywhere without him knowing at least one person, even when it was in another city. He made friends with everyone he met and was never too busy to stop and talk or say Hi, how are you doing? Harold was a man of routine. He always had his morning tea and took his long walk with his wife of 52 years. Often, the grandkids would join him on his walks, listening to his stories.Bragging about how beautiful and smart they were, Harold was very proud of his five granddaughters. He carried around their pictures in his wallet and didnt hesitate to show them off! He always let them know how proud he was of each and every one of them. Harold was proud of his WHOLE family and wasnt shy about telling them. The happiness of others was extremely important to Harold. Living life in his memory will mean being full of encouragement to always be kind, supportive, and hard working. He always knew where the best Christmas lights were because his family loved to go light looking when visiting for the holiday. He never missed a funeral, and he never turned down a reason to visit family, unless the roads were bad of course. He worried about his family when they were traveling and cautioned them to be careful. He always welcomed out of town relatives to stay with him, in fact he preferred it. Everyone was always welcome at Harold and Shirleys home. Harold always made sure his guests were well fed. When it was time for relatives to leave, he had tears in his eyes which always showed how much he truly cared. With a passion for gardening, Harold grew a nice garden every year. He was especially proud of his corn and tomatoes. He also enjoyed watching and helping his granddaughters pick raspberries.Harold is survived by his wife, Shirley Engen; sons Bryan (Lori) Engen and Eldon (Linda) Engen; five granddaughters, Faith (Devin) Conaway, Lindsie Engen, Mandi Engen, Caitlin Engen, and Jocelyn Engen; brother Robert (Glenda) Engen; sisters Evelyn (Dave) Falkenhagen, Mary (Vern) Vollum, and Elsie Lorenz; special cousin, Joann Heninger; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.Harold was preceded in death by his father, Alf Engen and mother Phyllis Engen.Donations are suggested to a charity of your choice.
