Joe Lopez Jr.

“There is a time to live, and a time to die…” these were some of the last words spoken of our beloved grandfather, Joe Lopez Jr. His sharp memory and loving personality remained present during those last few days, as his 90 year old body grew weary. He passed away on November 5, 2019, after a day filled with family, food, tears, and laughter. Joe was born to José Lopez and Encarnacion Abeyta on September 22, 1929, in Albuquerque, NM. Joe was the oldest of four, and the only boy. His father passed away when he was an infant. At that time, his great-grandmother, Crucita “Tita” Trujillo, began to provide care for Joe and his siblings. At age 8, Joe found his first job. He “ran ice” and performed other duties to contribute to the family’s financial needs. He lived with his grandmother, working and attending school until he joined the military. The character Joe exhibited throughout his life was influenced by the adverse circumstances he grew up in, and his great-grandmother’s love and sacrifice. At age 17, Joe enlisted into the Army. This was in 1947, just a few years after World War II came to an end. His career took him to Germany, Louisiana, Washington DC, Virginia, New Mexico, Alaska, California, Japan, Texas, and Vietnam. He was a highly decorated non-commissioned officer when he retired after proudly serving his country. Joe met his wife, Angeline in Vancouver. They were married in Couer d’Alene, ID shortly after they met. He is survived by a sister, Helen Rivera of California; daughters, Crucitia Lopez of Great Falls and JoAnne (Mark) Byron; grandchildren, Stella (James) Long of Vancouver, WA, Daniel Theissen of Helena, Monica (Jackie) Brown and Matthew (Erin) Riotutar, both of Great Falls; and nine great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Angeline; daughter, Gloria; sisters, Rosa and Stella; and granddaughter, Tina Mendiola. Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
