Jon Hallinan, youngest child of John and Ella (Brady) Hallinan, was a South Dakota native born in Roberts County on May 27, 1923. Jon grew up in New Effington and Rosholt and graduated from Rosholt High School, where he met his future wife, Gloria Hokenson. He joined the US Navy and served aboard a South Pacific subchaser during WWII. He and Gloria started married life in Bottineau, ND where Jon studied at the North Dakota School of Forestry. Later the couple lived in Willow Run, Ml while Jon continued his education at the nearby University of Michigan. With degree in hand, Jon joined the South Dakota Office of School and "public" Lands as a surveyor of harvestable trees in Custer State Park. After eight years in Custer, Jon, Gloria and children moved to Spearfish in 1959. Jon's later work life encompassed businesses as diverse as post and pole operations in Whitewood, SD and investments in livestock feed production in California and the Midwest.Following Gloria's death in 2008, Jon continued living in Spearfish, where he enjoyed the support of neighbors and friends. His last years were spent with his children in California and Montana. Jon passed away November 29, 2016 in Great Falls, Montana with family by his side.Jon was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria and son Michael.He is survived by his sister, Virginia Mahoney; daughter Pam (Terry) Curnow; sons Joel (Debby), Dana, Steve, and Tim (Fred); Michael's wife, Lil; and by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.Jon and Gloria will be reunited in burial in the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD on July 3, 2017 at 10:00 a.m.Recalling Jon and Gloria's love of animals and the outdoors their family asks that any contributions in their memory be directed to animal welfare and environmental protection.
