Justine Marie Nelson was born in Great Falls, Montana to George and Ethel Letvola Nelson on February 8, 1935. She spent her childhood on the Nelson family ranch near Belt. She was a graduate of Belt High School. After attending summer school at the College of Great Falls and earning a teaching certificate, she taught at the Clear Lake School north of Geraldine for two years. Her teaching career ended in June 1954 when she married Harold “Joe” Farmer. For the next thirty-three years she and her husband operated his family’s farm north of Geraldine. In addition to being involved in their farming operation, Justine was active in the Geraldine Community Methodist Church and the Pastime Club. She enjoyed horseback riding and participated in the annual trail rides of the Chouteau County Trailblazers for several years. While living on the farm she took painting lessons with a group of local women. She created many paintings with weathered buildings being one of her favorite subjects. Following her husband’s death in 1987, Justine moved to Great Falls where she resided until her own passing. After leaving the farm she enjoyed traveling. A trip to Australia and one to the Olympics in Calgary were highlights of her travels. She also enjoyed numerous bus tours. While living in Great Falls, she pursued her interest in art, becoming an avid art collector. She did volunteer work in the Art Department at the Chouteau County Fair and later volunteered at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. Failing health forced her into assisted care at Highgate Senior Living where she resided until her passing on May 13, 2021, at the age of 86. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents; and three brothers, George, Bob, and Charlie. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held in Geraldine on June 26, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. followed by a reception at the Geraldine Community Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials of the donor’s choice are suggested.
