Phillip Horning, 79, lifelong Great Falls resident who enjoyed skiing, golfing and spending time with and spoiling his grandchildren, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at a local care facility.His memorial service is Friday, October 25, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Lawn Memorial Chapel. Schnider Funeral Home is handling arrangements.Clarence Phillip was born in Great Falls, Montana on Dec. 22, 1933 to Duke and Katie Horning. Phil married Donna Richardson on Jan. 6, 1953 in Great Falls. He was able to enjoy 20 years of marriage with his true love before she passed away on June 7, 1973. Phil immediately became a single father to six children, all of whom he showed deep love for throughout his life.Phil was a hardworking man, employed with Great Northern Railroad, Falls Electric and he worked full time for the city's road department and co-owned, along with his brother and sister, the family business, the Minneapolis House Bar. He was a longtime member of the Montana Tavern Association and was honored with the Durkee Award in 2008.Phil enjoyed watching his children play sports and participated with them in his younger years. When he was blessed with grandchildren, his love for them was fiercer than anything. He cherished every second he could with his children's children, and even had numerous adopted grandchildren.Phil was well known for his generosity and a heart that was always kind and loving. He accomplished many great things in his life and was especially proud of spearheading the weekly Bingo game at Missouri River Manor in the late 1970s, an activity that continues to delight the home's residents today. His presence will be tremendously missed in his family and in the community.Grampa Phil is survived by his sons, Tom (Ginny) Horning, Rob (Marcy) Horning, Paul (P.J.) Horning, Phillip (Dorothy) Horning and Malachy Horning; daughter Diane (Dean) Whitmore; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother in law Ray Richardson; sister in law, Gayle Richardson; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and was looking forward to a great-great-grandchild, who he already has met and is holding in heaven. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Marie Horning; parents Clarence Joseph Duke and Catherine Ann Katie Horning; and siblings Thomas Clinton Horning and Shirley Marie Higbee.Condolences for the family may be posted online at www.schniderfuneralhome.com.
