Robert “Skip” Eugene Hedrick, aged 78, passed away on June 2, 2026, in Great Falls, Montana, surrounded by people who loved him deeply. Born on May 4, 1948, to Charles and Ruby Hedrick, Skip grew up in Great Falls and carried the spirit of Montana with him everywhere he went.
Skip graduated from Great Falls High School in 1967 and, with courage for beyond his years, joined the United States Marine Corps that same summer. He completed boot vamp at Camp Pendleton before being deployed to Vietnam, where he served three tours of duty. Skip was wounded three times in combat, earning three Purple Hearts, and was awarded a Bronze Star with Combat “V” for his heroism. Over the course of a distinguished career, he rose to the rank of First Sergeant and retired in June 1990, as a decorated Marine, whose service reflected unwavering loyalty, grit, and honor.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Skip was a man defined by loyalty, humor, and a quiet strength that made people feel safe in his presence. He loved deeply and without hesitation. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Winterrowd Hedrick; parents, Charles and Ruby; brothers, Check and James; as well as sister, Sharlene.
Skip leaves behind Nieces, Serena and Cammie; nephew, Drew Hedrick, sister-in-law, Peggy Hedrick; very close friend, Kristian Kellems, whose companionship brought comfort, laughter, and steady support in his later years; lifelong friends of 72 years, Danny Stroop and Ron Crocker – friendships that began in childhood and endured every season of life.
Skip’s legacy is one of bravery, devotion, and the kind of friendship that shapes a lifetime. Those who knew him will remember his sharp wit, his steady presence, the way he told stories, the way he teased with affection, the way he listened without judgement and the way he could make anyone feel like family. His presence filled rooms; his absence will be felt in every corner of the lives he touched.
Rest in peace, Marine. You have earned your place among the heroes. We will miss you more than words can say. Semper Fi, Skip.
